AfterMighty Mule Gate Motor Replacement: The Allen Owner’s Guide

For the motor itself, Mighty Mule’s OEM replacement arms are solid and priced accordingly. There are quality aftermarket equivalents available for the FM and early MM series, and we’ll tell you honestly whether the aftermarket unit will hold up or whether OEM is the smarter spend for your particular model. On MM371W and MM571W, the OEM is usually the better call, because the aftermarket arms don’t always carry the same duty-cycle rating in Texas heat.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Gate moves slower than it used to. The motor’s internal gearbox is losing efficiency, usually because the grease has broken down or a bearing is starting to drag. It won’t fix itself, and it only gets worse in summer.
- Gate stops mid-travel and reverses. This is often the control board reading too much resistance from a dying motor. It interprets the strain as an obstruction and backs off.
- Clicking at the board, but no movement from the arm. The board is sending signal, but the motor isn’t responding. That’s a motor or capacitor failure, not a board problem.
- Humming noise with no motion. The motor is getting power but the rotor or gear train is locked up. Continuing to run it will cook the board.
- Manual operation is stiff after disengaging the arm. That points to the chain, the pulley, or the gate’s own hardware dragging. This is worth addressing at the same time as the motor, or the next motor fails early.

A gate motor is a 12V to 24V DC system, but the incoming AC feed at the control board and the battery backup circuit carry enough current to hurt you. Add to that the moving steel of the gate itself, and this isn’t the place to learn by trial and error.
What you can safely check: the model label we mentioned above, the condition of the battery, whether the gate itself swings freely by hand with the motor disengaged. Those are useful notes to have when you call. Be careful disengaging the arm on a heavy gate; let the gate support itself before you walk away from it.
