Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Allen Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Mighty Mule keypad and intercom repair parts across Allen, with most repairs completed for $165 to $485 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a wired keypad, a wireless keypad, or the intercom module itself. Same-day service is available for most keypad failures, since our trucks carry the most common Mighty Mule MM and FM series replacements. The typical call comes in one of two ways: the gate stopped responding to the code entirely, or the intercom buzzes but nobody can hear you on the other end. Both are fixable the same visit in most cases.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule has put out several keypad series over the years, and they are not all interchangeable. The older MM271 and MM371 wired keypads were built to work with the FM350, FM500, and FM502 control boards. The newer wireless keypads, mostly the Mighty Mule MMKP1000 and the universal garage-compatible variants that came after, pair to the MM560, MM562, and MM571 series openers. The intercom modules, typically the Mighty Mule MMIC series, wire into the same control board but use a separate two-wire run to the house station. If you still have the opener’s original manual, the model number is printed on the inside cover. If not, open the control board box and look for the model sticker on the board itself, not the arm. That sticker is the only reliable identifier on these units. We also stock quality aftermarket keypads that are Mighty Mule pin-for-pin compatible, which run about 30 percent less than the OEM part and carry the same 90-Day Done Right Promise on our labor.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • The keypad lights up but the gate does not move. This usually points to a failed relay on the keypad’s output side or a corroded wire connection at the control board. The keypad thinks it’s sending the signal. The board never receives it.
  • Some buttons work, others don’t. The membrane contacts inside the keypad degrade unevenly, especially on south-facing driveway posts in Allen, where summer heat pushes surface temperatures past 130 degrees. One dead button today becomes three dead buttons by October.
  • The intercom station hums but voice audio is garbled or one-way. The MMIC series uses a shielded two-conductor wire, and when that shield breaks down, the audio channel picks up interference from the gate motor power leads running in the same conduit.
  • The gate works from the remote but not from the keypad. If remotes are functioning, the control board is fine. The problem sits between the keypad and the board: a dead keypad, a cut wire, or a failed splice from a previous handyman repair.
  • Entire keypad goes dark, no beep, no backlight. No power is reaching the unit. On wired models, that means a broken conductor or a tripped low-voltage fuse on the board. On wireless models, it’s usually failed batteries that corroded the terminals, which then took out the board contacts.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Allen homeowners, here’s what we quote on Mighty Mule keypad and intercom work, installed:

  • Wired keypad replacement (MM271/MM371 or compatible): $165 to $245 installed
  • Wireless keypad replacement (MMKP1000 or compatible): $195 to $285 installed, including pairing
  • Intercom module replacement (MMIC series): $285 to $485 installed, depending on wire condition
  • Control board relay or fuse repair, when the keypad failure is board-side: $145 to $225 installed

Every quote is settled before we turn a single screw. The parts price is shown separately from labor on the invoice. If we open the control box and find the board is the real culprit, not the keypad, we stop and show you what we found before any charge goes up. Our labor carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing. The senior and veteran discount of 5 percent applies to every repair, always.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a Mighty Mule keypad isn’t inherently dangerous the way a gate spring is, but it’s easier to get wrong than most people expect. The two mistakes we see most often in Allen are mismatched wire colors, which blows the low-voltage fuse on the control board, and a keypad that works for a week then dies because the splice wasn’t weather-sealed. If you want to test something before calling us, check the keypad batteries on wireless models and look for visible green corrosion on the terminals. That’s a five-minute check. Anything beyond that, we’d rather see it ourselves. The electronics on these boards are sensitive, and a wrong lead placement can turn a $200 keypad job into a $400 board replacement. Call us at (936) 274-8988 and we’ll get someone out the same day in most cases.
