Rust dust or a reddish stain running down from the hinge means the pin is deteriorating. On a steel gate, that can also mean the hinge plate itself is starting to thin.
• The gate bounces or shudders when it stops. A worn roller allows the gate leaf to shift vertically as it moves, and that translates into a shudder when the operator stops. It’s most noticeable on heavier estate gates, where the weight amplifies the movement.
